Awa and Talanoa at AISES 2025 — A First-Ever Cultural Experience!
This October, at the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) National Conference, attendees will experience the inaugural ‘Awa and Talanoa sessions—a first-of-its-kind cultural offering rooted in Pacific Islander traditions and knowledge.
Led by the esteemed Kumu Dr. Lelemia Irvine, alongside cultural practitioners and educators, these sessions will create sacred spaces for Indigenous students, professionals, and leaders to connect through storytelling, dialogue, and shared wisdom. Participants will engage in powerful conversations around identity, resilience, and community empowerment—strengthening relationships across Indigenous STEM fields and uplifting storytelling as a tool for healing, leadership, and innovation.

Healers of the Moana is a community-centered gathering that amplifies Pasifika voices in the realms of biotech, healing, and clinical research. Rooted in ancestral wisdom and driven by a vision of health justice, we explore the intersections of traditional knowledge and modern science to address the health disparities impacting Pasifika communities.
Through storytelling, science, and sovereignty, we reclaim the narrative around medicine, clinical trials, and biotech—ensuring Pasifika communities are not only included but centered in shaping the future of healthcare. Our mission is to uplift and amplify these voices, advocating for access to essential medical resources and honoring the interconnectedness of cultural healing and scientific progress.
